His parents first brought him to England when he was 2 and again when he was 6 or 7. This time, they left him and his sister Dorothea (Dae) with Elsie & Dudley Symon who became responsible for their upbringing except for a period of about 6 months when he was 12. He (and Dae?) joined his parents in Leicester during this period.
There is no record of him seeing his father after the age of 12 but his mother visited England at least once in the 20's and 30's and visited Woodbridge on both occasions.
Educated at Woodbridge School after which he went to St Thomas's Hospital to qualify as a doctor. He joined the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) on 23 April 1937 for a Short Service Commission and was posted to Egypt, Hong Kong and Singapore. He was a fine sportsman, particularly tennis, badminton and rugby.
With the imminent fall of Singapore in 1942, the HQ was moved to Java. At the fall of Java, he became a Prisoner of War and began to organise medical treatment. Eventually, he was responsible for three PoW hospitals in Java. (A fellow prisoner, an Australian surgeon Leslie Poidevin, wrote the book "Samurais and Circumcisions" which graphically narrates this period.)

Later he was at Bandoeng.
