Census records show a Betty Birnie Nichol married to James with a dob of c1789 so she would have been 43/44 when Robert was born. She was born in Hawick which is c15 miles from the Castleton area. The ancestry.com 1861 census transcription gives her age as 42 instead of 72. She died later that year.
