Note    N12         Index
dob but no place from Wagstaff Family Bible, place of birth from census records. Marriage Certificate gives Robert's age is given as 27 ie dob 1833/34
No IGI record but a Robert is in the Nichol/Burnet family in the census records. However, Robert's father was a farmer (given on Robert's marriage cert) and not a carrier as in the census records found so far.

Scots naming traditions don't seem to apply to his children; first daughter named after maternal grandmother (Elizabeth Wagstaff), second daughter named after paternal grandmother (Sarah is Agnes' sister), first son after paternal grandfather (Samuel instead of the expected James), second son after maternal grandfather (William - Samuel expected for second son). No clues to name of father's (James') wife from the naming.

1841 Census 2 possibles from ancestry.co.uk: born in Newcastleton in 1833 parents James & Billy, siblings Thomas, Mary, Alexander or born in Newcastleton in 1833 parents Elliot & Isable. [Images not available] Former chosen because James is father on marriage certificate. [Billy is probably transcription error for Betty]
