Oregon Pioneer. United States Postmaster, Member of the Oregon State Legislature. Enoch Conyers served a year with Company A of the First Regiment of Illinois Volunteers in the Mexican War and was discharged in 1847. He returned to Quincy, Illinois, where he attended school and later studied medicine. When he settled in Oregon he was the only individual with any medical knowledge between Portland and Astoria.
In 1848 he was the first telegraph operator at Burlington, Iowa. After a year, he returned to Quincy to help his father with the family sawmill. He learned the bricklayer's trade which he practiced until 1852 when he decided to cross the plains to California.
He ended up in Oregon instead. In the winter of 1852 he worked laying brick at Hillsborough. In Spring 1853 he went to Oak Point, where he worked at Abernathy's sawmill. He married Hannah C. Bryant in the fall of 1853. Not long after his marriage he moved to Clatskanie and bought the right to 320 acres of land.
Conyers was the first United States Postmaster when the post office opened in 1872. He operated the post office, hotel, and the first store in his home in Clatskanie. He was Postmaster for 14 years.
A man of many talents, Conyers built and operated the first steamboat, named the Novelty, on the Clatskanie River. He carried freight and passengers and also did towing on the Clatskanie River.
He built the first business building in Clatskanie which was financed by his son-in-law, W.K. Tichenor. He owned the controlling interest in the Clatskanie Chief, a weekly newspaper.
He was the first Justice of the Peace. From 1860 to 1864 and from 1908 to 1910 he served in the Oregon State Legislature as a Republican. He was a charter member of the Masonic Lodge at Rainier.
He was the son of Enoch Conyers and Mary West.
