A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, at Thurston Christian Church in Springfield for Virgil C. Hansen of Springfield, who died Oct. 1 of age-related causes. He was 96.
He was born Dec. 14, 1913, in Springfield to Christian and Lulla West Hansen. He married Nellie Daniels on Aug. 9, 1960, in Thurston. She died Nov. 26, 2006.
He attended Oregon State College. He owned and operated a walnut and filbert orchard in Thurston, then moved to Madras to farm alfalfa and hay. He returned to farm his orchard in later years.
Survivors include three daughters, Irma Hanson of Deer Park, Wash., Elaine Richards of Pendleton and Norma Jean Smith of Gresham; eight grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. A grandson, Lance Brabham, died Dec. 3, 2007.
