West, Ephraim B. - Ephraim B West enlisted in Company B of the 1st Alabama Cavalry, USV as a Captain on February 1, 1864, in Pulaski, Tennessee, and was mustered in March 27, 1864, in Decatur, Alabama. He was enrolled by General Dodge for a period of 3 years. The Company Descriptive Book recorded him as 26 years of age, 6’ tall, having a light complexion, gray eyes, light hair, born in Heard County, Georgia and a farmer by occupation. Ephraim B. West was appointed from Citizen to Captain of Company F, 1st Alabama Cavalry Volunteers by authority of the Secretary of War to Brigadier General G.M. Dodge by Special Order No. 94, Headquarters Left Wing, 16th Army Corps. A Notation in his file from the Military Secretary’s Office of the War Department dated July 22, 1904, stated the following: “Under the provisions of the act of Congress, approved February 24, 1897, this officer is held and considered by this Department to have been mustered into the service of the United States in the grade of Captain, Company B, 1st Alabama Cavalry Volunteers to take effect from April 12, 1864, to fill an original vacancy. He was mustered out October 20, 1865, from Huntsville, Alabama stating the following: “Mustered in from Civil life to fill original vacancy by authority of Secretary of War. This officer has made an affidavit before me that he has duly rendered all returns of public property for which he has been accountable in accordance with Army regulations.”

Ephraim B. West was born about 1840 in Heard County, Georgia to Ephraim Hamilton West and Lucinda Wallace McClendon. Ephraim Hamilton West was born May 2, 1798, in Oglethorpe County, Georgia and died February 15, 1864, in Randolph County, Alabama. Lucinda was born April 27, 1809 in Georgia and died in July 1887 in Randolph County, Alabama.
