Ray West was born in a house caddy cornered from the old Baskin Grocery Store in Cedar Springs Community north of Sawyer, OK. He was the son of Earl and Leona Inge West, the 19th great grandson of King Edward I "Longshanks", and the 5th great grandson of Chief Oconostota of the Chickamauga Cherokee. He married Hazle Murphy on June 1, 1959 in DeQueen, Sevier County, Arkansas. They had daughters Marsha West Magby and Debi West {Rowden} Clay and sons Tony West and Daryl West. Grandchildren Aaron, Chad, Jennifer, Kristin, Sarah, Daymon, Bailey, and Kaden. Great grandchildren Nadalie, William, Kayden, Matthew, Kaleigh, Cameron, Brodey, Mark, and Calum.

He was a master carpenter and later became the favorite boat mechanic in Choctaw County and all the surrounding counties. He was an avid fisherman and was the President of the Hugo Bass Club for many years. But probably his favorite accomplishment was serving as a Volunteer Fireman for the cities of Sawyer and Fort Towson, becoming the Volunteer Fire Chief of Sawyer until the time of his stroke, and thereafter serving as the lifetime honorary Fire Chief. He was honored with the "Last Call" rites at his funeral.
