Obituary Bismarck Tribune (May 26, 2004)
Clarence Leon West, 92, Mandan, died May 24, 2004, at a Mandan care center. Clarence was born Feb. 22, 1912, at the West family farmstead west of Mandan in Morton County, the son of Leonardis and Isabella West. He went to country school in Morton County and graduated from Mandan High School in 1934. He worked on the family farm and in Mandan until he enlisted in the Navy in 1942. He was a trained medic and graduate from the Medical Corp School in Norfolk, Va.
He served during World War II at military bases on the West Coast and on Guadalcanal, and at Auckland, New Zealand. He married Magdalen Schaefer while stationed at the Bremerton Naval Base in Washington State. When the war ended, they returned to Mandan. They had two sons, Terry and Leon, and a daughter, Renee. Magdalen died in 1980. Clarence married Grace Johnson in 1981.
Clarence began employment with the Production Credit Association as a fieldman in 1946. He served as secretary and treasure and in 1961 began his tenure as manager with the organization growing under his leadership. He retired in 1974.
He and his wife, Grace, were the Senior King and Queen of the 1995 Folkfest. While a resident of the Medcenter One Care Center, Clarence enjoyed visiting with people and teasing the staff. He entered the yearly talent show and took 2nd place for his singing for the last two years. Family and his Scottish heritage were important to Clarence as he organized family reunions that brought third and fourth generation cousins together to find a closeness that is usually found only with siblings. He was proud of his children and loved the time he was able to spend with his grandchildren.
Clarence is survived by his two sons and one daughter-in-law; Terry, Lynnwood, Wash., and Leon and JoAnn, Brandon, S.D.; one daughter and son-in-law, Renee and Gary Brucker, Mandan; two stepsons, Jon Johnson and his wife, Janice, Bloomington, Minn., and Keith Johnson, Palm Springs, Calif.; his grandchildren Ryan Brucker, Albuquerque, N.M., Alicia Brucker, Ames, Iowa, and Conrad, Devan and Sommer West, all of Brandon; four step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; one sister and brother-in-law, Ethyel and Floyd Wherely, Albuquerque; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Magdalen and Grace; his daughter-in-law, Penny (Helen) Toman West; five brothers; and five sisters.
