OCRtext: The Kansas City Star Location: Kansas City, Missouri Issue Date: Saturday, February 20, 2021 Bedford, Texas Betty Carlene Custead, 89, of Bedford, Texas, passed into the arms of our Lord on January 31, 2021 with her devoted son, David, by her side. A memorial service will be held in her honor at the retirement community where she lived. The family suggests contribution to Wounded Warrior Project (woundedwarrior. org). Carlene was born on June 28, 1931 in Pleasant Hope, Missouri, the only child of Mary (Collins) West and Carl Venson West. They moved to Independence, Missouri in 1941 and were active members of First Baptist Church.
After graduating from William Chrisman High School in 1949 she attended Central Missouri State College, Warrensburg, Missouri, Kansas City Junior College, and Central Business College, Kansas City, Missouri. Carlene was married to Jerry Russell Custead in 1955 and they had a son David Lynch and a daughter Caren Marie. Carlene and Jerry were committed members of their local church. She was a dedicated homemaker and church member, and she was an active member of the Independence Young Matrons for years. Her favorite pastimes were reading devotionals and playing bridge.
She was preceded in death by her parents Mary and Carl West, her daughter Caren Marie (Custead) Kassen, and husband Jerry Custead. Survivors include son David Custead, and wife Jo. Their son Daniel and daughters Marie and Amy of Fort Worth, Texas. Also a son-in-law Kirby Kassen and his sons, Chris, Kevin, Steven, Craig and Kyle of Texas and New Mexico.
