Son of Eliza McDougal, born in Green County, KY, and Jacob C. West, a native of TN. John was one of eight children.
John became first Assitant Contract Surgeon to the 28th IL Inf., in Apr. 1862, and in Dec. of the same year resigned, due to poor heatlh. He was a then a graduate of Rush Medical College, Chicago, in Feb. 1864.
Married Harriet L. Bishop Feb. 1863 at Williamsville. After she died in June 1875 leaving one child, F. Hial, he married Susie Lockwood in Pittsburg, PA Feb. 1, 1876. Susie was a native of Norwalk, CT. Dr. J.M. West practiced medicine in Springfield.
