Alexander Balus WEST died in the Third Battle of Winchester.
Third Winchester was the bloodiest battle of the Shenandoah Valley, resulting in more casualties than the entire 1862 Valley campaign. By the end of October, 1864, Sheridan had brought the Valley firmly under Union control.
The Third Battle of Winchester is known as the Battle of Opequon. Opequon is an unincorporated community along Opequon Creek in Frederick County, Virginia. It is located on Cedar Creek Grade (VA 622) at Miller Road (VA 620) and is also known as Kernstown, Virginia. The battle, which was fought on September 19, 1864, was the bloodiest battle ever fought in the Shenandoah Valley.
Gravesite Details: Alexander in NOT buried in this cemetery. He is probably in a mass grave in Frederick Co., Virginia.

Charlotte note
Early land and tax records indicate that there were fathers and sons named John West in Orange and Wilkes Counties. Sometime between 1752-1768, John West, Sr. sold and deeded land in Orange Co, NC, to John West, Jr. and Alexander West. Tax records show that Alexander West was in Orange Co, NC, in 1755; in 1775, he was Surry Co, NC; and by 1775-1782 he was on Glady Branch in Wilkes Co, NC. The changes in county boundaries may account for the name changes of the locations; i.e. Wilkes was created from Surry in 1777.

no evidence of his marriage or children but marriage was about 1750 if dob of first child is correct

Charlotte, My direct ancestor, Isaac West had at least three brothers named Solomon, John, and Alexander. Their father, John West, gave Solomon, John and Alexander 100 acres each in 1755 along Stoney and Toms Creek in Orange County, North Carolina. He also gave 100 acres to his two daughters in the name of their husbands. Isaac was too young to receive land in 1755. We think Isaac was born about 1745 so older brothers, Alexander, John and Solomon would have arrived on earth earlier. Alexander had three sons named Solomon, John and Alexander Jr. also. Does any of this fit your Alexander?
Charlotte West June 19 @ 5:14am
Norman, Thanks so much. That's good news for me. That's my family--Alexander West, John West, Jr./Margaret "Peggy" Witherspoon, John Balus West/Mary Ann Swanson, Alexander Balus West/Nancy Land, Thomas Harvey West/America McNeil, William Charles West, Sr./Ada Beatrice McQueen, and then my father, William Charles West, Jr. Your research is almost exactly like mine. I've found John West, Sr, who married Mary Madden giving land to Alexander and John, Jr. in Wilkes County, NC which was likely the same place but in Surry before Wilkes was created. I have believed for quite some time that my Alexander was the brother of Solomon, John Jr., and Isaac. All of these pieces fit together. My problem is finding a male West in my family to take the Y-DNA test. Our line of males is diminishing. My sister has a match with a man who descends from John West and his 2nd spouse, Eleanor Massey. My sister and I both match a male West who descends from a John West, b c1732 in Tryon, NC.
In her book Mrs. Allie Everhart-Miller indicated that Edy’s father was Alexander West, Jr. She also stated that his father, Alexander West, Sr., was thought to have come from North Carolina.
see text below
pg 170 Everhart-Miller and Allied Families
Alexander West Jr. is the son of Alexander West, Sr.. whom we believe came from NC originally; he lived on Richland Creek near Town of Greenville and near the forks of the Spartanburns and Laurens roads. No will. Wrote Probate Judge at Laurens and he says no Alex West on record there. He had five children as follows:
1. Edith (Edy or Eda). married Archie Fowler. She died July 19, 1855.
2. Phoebe (died Sept. 3. 1868, married Isaac Green July 8 1790. He was born 1762, died Feb. 6, 1831
3. Polly, married Joe Bates.
4. Isaac.
5. William, settled in Tenn. on Hiawassee River.
Above dates furnished by Virginia Miller Price of Greenville. S. C. and a member of the family, who is making every effort to keep exact records; she has furnished me a great deal of data. Alexander West's Rev. War record has not been proven, but we feel sure he served
