Sarah was the daughter of Amos West and Maria Barton Smoot. The Wests were a prominent Nicholas, Kentucky family. She was widowed early and remarried to Col. Richard A Stewart about 1874. The couple moved to Marion, Florida with Sarah's young son, George Wilson West.
Obituary:
Mrs. Sarah A. Stewart, aged 76 years, died in this city last night at 11:30 o'clock after a lingering. Deceased was the mother of the late George W. Wilson, formerly editor of the Times-Union and was a native of Kentucky having moved to Florida about thirty-five years ago. The body has been prepared for shipment by Funeral Directors Moulton & Kyle, and will be forwarded to Orange Lake, this morning.
