WEST, Eugene M., 82, passed away Thurs., Nov. 10, 2005 at St. Joseph Hospital. Born in Williamsburg, KY Aug. 6, 1923, he was the son of the late John C. West and Viola W. West. He was a graduate from Cumberland College where he attended until he enlisted in the Air Force during WWII. He finished his education at U.S.C. and received his Masters Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Kentucky. He served in the US Air Force for four years where he was a First Lt./Navigator/Intelligence Officer for the 20th Recognizance Squadron, B24 Liberator, 5th Air Force. He was shot down on this 38th mission over the Japanese Sea and captured as a prisoner of war until the war ended. He received the American Theatre Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Philippines Liberation Service Medal, Victory Medal, and Air Medal. Mr. West was dedicated to his country. He was a highly respected Licensed Civil Engineer in KY for over fifty years and authored various drainage manuals still in use. He was retired from the Highway Lab and L.E. Gregg & Associates where he was one of the partners but recently had still been practicing engineering. He was a Master Mason of Lodge #90 F & AM in Williamsburg, KY. Mr. West was a 53 year member of Chevy Chase Baptist Church where he was a Sunday school teacher and member of the choir. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Cumberland College in 2002 where he served on the Board of Trustees. His greatest joy was his family, attending grandkid's ballgames, family vacations and attending UK ballgames.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Jean Canter Stotts West; three daughters, Eugenia Beth Pennington, Kimberly Ann (Chris) Marnitz, and Kelley Susan (Kurt) Rose; eight grandchildren, Laura and Andrew Pennington, Joshua, Brooke, and Shelby Marnitz, and Katie, John, and Jake Rose; his sister, Joyce (David) Livingston of Bowling Green, KY; a niece, Pam Thurman; a nephew, Tim Livingston; numerous cousins; and many, many friends. He was loved so and will be missed.
Funeral services will 1 pm Tues. at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Road, by Pastor Jim McKenzie. Pallbearers will be Kurt Rose, Chris Marnitz, Jeff McClanahan, Hugh L. Stotts Jr., Joshua Marnitz, and Andrew Pennington. Burial will follow in Camp Nelson National Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 - 9 pm Mon.
