In 1850, he was recorded in the Marion Township, Hendricks County census records as Zurich. He was one of 8 children recorded. The others were Hannah, Sarah, Rhoda, Polly, Moses, Isaac and Narcissa. Hannah and Sarah were born in Kentucky; the rest in Indiana.
By 1860, he was already married to Sarah and they had one 2 year-old son, James W.
In 1870, he was recorded in the census as Zury. A son, Moses, was born about 1862.
In 1880, Xury and Sarah were still in Marion Township with James and Moses living at home.

He married Cora L. Flynn on April 15, 1886 in Hendricks County, Indiana. The 1900 census showed him living in Marion Township, Hendricks County, Indiana. His wife was listed as Cora and they had a 7-year-old son named Carlos. His birth was listed as May 1862 in Indiana. In 1910, the census indicated he was widowed. He and his son, Carlos, were living in Anderson, Madison County, Indiana. By 1917, his son, Carlos, had moved to Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan.
His obituary from the October 11, 1926 Anderson Daily Bulletin:
Funeral services for Moses C. West, age 64, former city fireman and grocery proprietor, who expired Saturday night at the family home, 810 West Second street, were conducted this afternoon at the First Baptist church. Rev. Sidney W. Powell, pastor, was in charge of the services. Burial was in East Maplewood cemetery. Mr. West is survived by the widow, Mrs. Mary West and two sons, Corlis West of Detroit, and Fayne West of this city [Anderson, Indiana].

There is a marriage record in the WPA Index to Marriages in Hendricks County, Indiana (1824-1920) which shows Sarah E. Martin married Harvey E. West on November 15, 1855. It is probable that this is Sarah and Xury.
In 1900, Sarah was still in Marion Township, but only had a boarder named John Flynn* living with her. The census record indicated that she was born in June 1837, that she had 4 children, but only 2 living and that her father was from Kentucky and her mother from England.
