As the great, great-granddaughter and namesake of Susan Elizabeth West Smith, I was thrilled to give an overview of her life at the reunion. Here are a few important dates and highlights from her productive and meaningful life. Most of this information was gathered from wonderful articles and writings found in previous reunion books. Make sure to read over these to find a more complete story and pictures of her life as well.
Susan Elizabeth Bennett Nichols
1833, Dec. 4 Born in Benton County, Tennessee. The fourth child of Samuel Walker West and Margaret Cooper West.
1838-1840 Joins The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints as a young girl. Moves to Nauvoo, Illinois with her family.
1844 Joseph Smith, prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, is martyred.
1846 Spring of 1846, Susan and her family leave Nauvoo. Susan was now 18 years old. Summer of 1846, the family moves to Mount Pisgah for several months. Mt. Pisgah was a temporary way station in southern Iowa for emigrants traveling west from Nauvoo to Winter Quarters. The saints endured many hardships here. 150 people die during the first 6 months. Later in the year, her family moves to Kanesville, Iowa where they remain for the next 5 years until the Spring of 1851.
1851, Sept 25 Arrives in Salt Lake Valley with the Harry Walton company and camps on the Jordan River.
1851, Oct. Several weeks later Susan and her family are sent to Parowan, Utah, located in southern Utah because the thought is that Saints from the southern States would adapt well to Utah’s Dixie.
1851-1857 A home is built in Parowan for Margaret Cooper West (Susan’s mother) and her children. Susan’s father, Samuel Walker West, makes his headquarters in Washington County with another one of his wives and family. This home is where Susan lives until she marries. During these years, Susan enjoys life, learning to cook, weave, quilt, as well as make soap. It is said of the West children, “[they] were very close to one another. They expressed their love and affection one for another frequently.” **The bag woven by Susan West to collect flour is shown as well as the sampler she stitched as a young girl. These items are in the Bennett Archive Collection.
President George A. Smith, 1st Counselor to Brigham Young, the President of the Church, was in charge of colonization in Southern Utah. He maintained a home in Parowan for this wife, Zilpha. The Smith and West families became very close.
1857, Oct. 28 At age 23, Susan marries George A. Smith to become his 7th and favorite wife. She leaves Parowan to live at the Church Historian’s office with her new husband and his first wife, Bathsheba. There is a great love and devotion that exists between Bathsheba and Susan.
1859, April 21 Clarissa West Smith is born as the first of five daughters. Their other daughters are Margaret, Elizabeth, Priscilla and Emma Pearl. Over the next years, Susan keeps in touch with her relatives and keeps all the letters she received from her loved ones. She and her children often spend vacations with her mother in Parowan.
1875 George A. Smith dies. Susan is 42 years old. She is left sufficiently well off to educate and take good care of her family. Later builds a large home at 29 North West Temple on the George A. Block. She has many boarders from various parts of the state who live at her home while they either work or attend the University of Utah. At the completion of the Salt Lake Temple, Susan is called to be one of the first ordinance workers. She devotes herself to this work for 20 years.
1923 Moves into her daughter’s home, Clarissa and William N. Williams’ home, at 1401 Sigsbee Avenue. Soon after she moves in a reception is held in her honor to celebrate her 90th birthday.
1926, Oct. 14 Susan Elizabeth West Smith dies at age 93, having lived with her daughter’s family for the last three years.
