John Elgar West went home to be with the Lord on Monday, September 27, 2010. He died at home where he had been lovingly cared for by his wife Roberta, close family members, many friends and Harbors Home Health & Hospice.
John was born March 24, 1926 in Sauk, Washington to John Wesley and Jesse Imes West. There he attended school that had two rooms and one teacher until it consolidated to Concrete School District.
In 1942, though underage, he found a way to work as a truck driver for an Army contractor in Hanford, Wash. This lasted about one year until he was threatened by the draft, so he joined the Navy. While serving in the Navy, he successfully completed 1-1/2 years of schooling to become a dental lab technician.
On September 15, 1945 he married Jonnie L. Phillips. They had three children: twin boys, Richard and Robert; and one daughter Patricia. They later divorced.
John worked as a dental lab technician for several years in California before returning to Washington.
In Washington he worked in the cedar mills as a sawyer. John became owner-operator of West Shake Mill in Granite Falls, which he operated for a number of years. He became a shingle saw filer in later years, pursuing this career for the next thirty years, though he really never stopped working.
On April 25, 1998 John married Roberta Beardslee in Neilton, Wash. She survives him at the family home in Montesano. In addition to his wife Roberta, he is survived by his sons, Richard (Toni) West of Hayden, Idaho; Robert (Virga) West of Hillsboro, Ore; daughter, Patricia Wanner of Themopolis, Wyo; five grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; step-children, Joe (Carol) McCloskey of Montesano; Ken (June) McCloskey of Kingston, Idaho and Debbi Moran of Cosmopolis.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 2, 2010 at the Central Park Neighborhood Church with a potluck reception following in Rester Hall.
