Life sketch
Elizabeth was submitted in June 2002 for Temple Ready before I knew her maiden name.
1785 - Elizabeth Ann Sikes was born 5 September 1785 in Halifax County, Virginia probably Halifax County since her father was enumerated on the 1785 Hailfax County Tax List. Her parents were Thomas A. Sikes and Sarah Willis. (Source a and f).
The Family had moved to Oglethorpe County, GA by 1787 (Elizabeth was 2 years old at this time and this may account for the discrepancies on later census records showing her birth as VA and then GA and then VA again).
The Sikes' moved from Oglethorpe County, Georgia after the land lottery of 1805, to Rutherford County, Tennessee before the 1808 Rutherford County Tax List was taken. (Source c, d and e).
1809 - Elizabeth married Asa H. West in 1809 in Tennessee. They had 5 children. (Source a).
1818 - Elizabeth's husband Asa died in 1818.
1830 U.S. FEDERAL CENSUS - Rutherford County, Tennessee: lists Elizabeth as age over 40 under 50 (born between 1781 & 1789). Elizabeth's household: 1 male 10 to 15, 1 male 15 to 20, 1 female 10 to 15, 1 female 40 to 50 years old. The census shows Elizabeth living on property that was located between her father's (Thomas A. Sikes) and her brother's (Jesse Sikes) land.
1840 U.S. FEDERAL CENSUS - Cole County, Missouri: lists Elizabeth West household: 2 males 20 to 30 (Andrew & Thomas), 1 female 50 to 60 years old (Elizabeth).
1850 U.S. FEDERAL CENSUS - Kaw Township, Jackson County, Missouri taken 12 August 1850: lists Elizabeth West age 60, born Virginia living with her sons Andrew J. West and Thomas West & family.
1850 U.S. FEDERAL CENSUS - 58th District Moniteau County Missouri taken 21 Oct 1850: lists Elizabeth as 64 years old, born in Virginia and could not read or write. Living with her daughter Sarah H. Springer and 3 grandchildren in Linn Township, Moniteau County, Missouri. Thus, her birth year would be about 1786.
1860 U.S. FEDERAL CENSUS - Moniteau County Missouri. Elizabeth West is not listed living with the Springer's or alone as an individual.
1860 U.S. FEDERAL CENSUS - Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri: Elizabeth West age 76, born Georgia(error), living with her son Thomas West & wife Mary A. (Anthony) & family .
1870 U.S. FEDERAL CENSUS - Kaw Township, Jackson County, Missouri taken 23 August 1870: Elizabeth West age 85, born Georgia (error), living with her son Thomas West and his family.
1877 - Elizabeth West died 11 September 1877 while living with her sons Andrew J. West and Thomas West and their families in Kansas City. Elizabeth is buried in the family plot at the Elmwood Cemetery lot K-86 included in Lot K-85, Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri - at the corner of Van Brunt & Truman Road. (Source b).
