Martha West, 64, Drowned Blue River -Son the serts Wife's Nagging Caused Him to Confess Falsely. (By The Star's Own Service.) Greenville, S. March A Kansas City man told Greenville police today that he pushed his mother into the Blue river in Kansas City last year and watched The man, Herbert Richard West, 27, who described himself as an unemployed dishwasher, signed a statement that he pushed Mrs. Martha West, 64, into the river May 29 near St. John avenue. He said he called police, who recovered the body. West said he was walking home about 11 o'clock at night with his mother from a tavern. that time the two lived at 7200 Scarritt avenue. "As we crossed a railroad bridge, we got into an argument lover stopped on the bank he said. near bridge. My mother was near the water and holding to a wire. I pulled her loose and pushed. I stood near the river bank and watched her West told Chief Detective W. Hammond that his conscience had bothered him. When West walked into the police station he wandered around the building and talked various officers before he finally said he had a confession to make.
Later, however, West said he made up the story because of a disagreement with his wife, who, he said, nagged him about squandering money. He told police he arrived here January 21 and married the former Miss Frances E. Johnson about a month ago. He explained the romance had started by carrespondence when he was living in Kansas City. Kansas City police were notified of the confession. Lieut. Harry Nesbitt a warrant would be obtained today as a step to returning West. He said West had waived extradition. The night of the death West said his mother had been drinking in a tavern. on Winner road most of He said he had gone to bring her home late at night, and as the two walking home his mother slipped into the river. He made a futile attempt to help her, he said. West was sentenced to two years in the penitentiary in 1942 on a morals charge. He has had numerous appearances in municipal court.

1786 - Asa Henry West was born 18 October 1786 in Dobbs County, North Carolina to parents George West and Mary Ann Dillahunty. (Source a and f).
1809 - Asa married Elisibeth Sikes in 1809 (daughter of Thomas A. Sikes and Sarah Willis) in Rutherford County, Tennessee. They had 5 children. (Source f).
1810 US FEDERAL CENSUS - Tennessee Asa West is not listed. His father George is not listed. Conclusion - the West Families came to Tennessee after the 1810 Census was taken. Sarah H. West Springer says in the 1850 U.S .Census that she was born in Tennessee in 1811. So the West's may have arrived in Tennessee within one year of the 1810 Census.
1812 - Other confirmation for the West's coming to Tennessee in 1811 is that Asa West fought in the War of 1812 to 1814 in a Tennessee unit. Military Record reads as follows: " Asa West, Private, Enlisted- 28 January 1814, Regiment Commander- Brigadier General Johnson, Company Commander- Captain Robert Carson, Branch of Service- Infantry, Date of Discharge- Unknown, Place of Residence- Unknown. Have index card which lists- Asa West Private, 2nd West Tennessee, Militia, (Cheatham's unit). (Source c).
