William's Will names the following children: Reuben (Rubin) executor, Jacob, Caleb, Kendle, Lovey, Luah, William, Prettyman, Robert, Hessey,

The Reubens West of Sussex County, DE Posted 15 Apr 2008 by AnnGu3
There are several men named Reuben West living in Baltimore Hundred of Worcester County, MD / Sussex County, DE. An examination of Marriage, Wills, Probate and Census data will help to distinguish their identities.
We will begin with a Will Abstract of Alexander Linch of Worcester County, MD. The West and Lynch families are frequently interlinked in the records of Worcester & Sussex.

ALEXANDER LINCH, planter, 19 November 1765, 3 June 1767F:155
Alexander Linch 19 November 1765
To eldest son Levi Linch - 100 acres being part of tract Friend’s Assistance and right and title 100 acres "entered by me on Mr. William Shanklin’s book" and lying above the west line of Warrington’s Cut Ground
To son Ruben Linch - remainder of Friend’s Assistance but that "he should have no right to hinder or molest my trice and lawful wife Esther Linch" during her widowhood
To grandsons Reuben West and Caleb West - heifer
To wife Ester Linch - remainder of estate for widowhood
To three youngest children Reuben Linch, Sarah Linch, Molly Linch - remainder of estate after wife’s widowhood
Executor: son Reuben
Witness: Arthur Lathbury, Miles Hudson, Daniel Coe
3 June 1767
Note: This abstract clearly identifies that Alexander's executor is his son Reuben Linch and not Reuben West.

William West (Jnr), Last Will and Testament, 25 Dec 1800
Wife Keziah
Son Reuben (probably eldest, inherits all lands and tenaments)
Son Caleb, 30 pounds, to ensure youngest son Prettimon West is raised, maintained & supported.
Daughter Hessey (probably youngest unmarried daughter)
Other children: Jacob, Kendle, Lovey, Luah, William, Robert
Source: Sussex County, DE Wills, Scanned Original
Note: This will indicates the presence of another Caleb and Reuben. It might also indicate that William was once married to Alexander Linch's daughter if this Caleb and Reuben are the grandsons mentioned in Alexander Linch's will.

Reuben A: Reuben West, bro. of Caleb, son of William West, grandson of Alexander Linch, husband of Nancy Cottingham
Reuben B: Reuben West, son of Reuben & Nancy Cottingham West, husband of Nancy Johnson
So...

William West Jr married 1st: Sarah or Molley Linch and 2nd Keziah (nee unknown)
Caleb and Reuben are the sons of William & Sarah/Molley Linch

1760
There are no census records for the area at this time.
William is living in the area & married Sarah/Molley Linch before 1765 when Alexander Linch writes his will and named his grandsons Caleb and Reuben (A) West.
There is no indication of the age of Alexander's grandchildren, but Reuben (A) and his brother are likely living with their parents. They were born before 1765.

1770
There are no census records for the area for this time frame. Sometime after 1765, William's wife, Sarah/Molley died and he remarried to Keziah (nee unknown). Caleb and Reuben (A) are at least 5 years old.

1780
Again, there are no census records of the area for this time frame. Sometime after 1765, William's wife, Sarah/Molley died and he remarried to Keziah (nee unknown). Caleb and Reuben (A) are at least 15 years old.

1790
There is no Delaware census for 1790. The reconstructed 1790 Census of Delaware, based on tax records, shows Caleb and Reuben (A) living in Baltimore Hundred. Only 1 Reuben is listed for Sussex, DE.
Sometime after 1765, William's wife Sarah/Molley died and he remarried to Keziah (nee unknown). Caleb and Reuben (A) are at least 25 years old.
31 October 1793: Reuben (A) West married Nancy Cottingham in Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE

1800
Sussex County, DE Census
Reuben West, Dagsboro Hundred
1 M born 1756-1765
1 M born 1775 - 1784
1 M born 1790 - 1800
1 F born 1755-1765
2 F born 1790 - 1800
2 Slaves
Note: There is 1 male born 1775 - 1784 who is too old to be the child of Reuben and Nancy Cottingham West. At age 16-25, he could be a brother, other relation, or a laborer. This enumeration does not yet include Reuben (B) West who was not born until 1812-1813.

William West, Baltimore Hundred
1 M 45 & up, born before 1755
1 M 26 - 44
1 M 16 - 25
2 M 10 - 15
1 F 26 - 44
1 F < 10
Note: Based upon William's will his children include: Reuben, Caleb, Jacob, Kendle, Lovey, Luah, William, Prettyman, Robert, and Hessy. So if sons Reuben, Caleb and Jacob are living in their own households in 1800, that should leave 3 sons and 3 daughters in the house, unless some of the daughters are married. It appears from the will that only daughter Hessy remains unmarried as Wm leaves her what is basically a dowry. Examination of the census shows 4 male children rather than 3 and 1 female child. This suggests that either Reuben, Caleb or Jacob are not the one belonging to William West.

Caleb West, Baltimore Hundred
1 M 26 - 44, born 1756 - 1774 (Can be shortened to 1756-1765)
3 M < 10
1 F 26 - 44
3 F < 10

Jacob West, Dagsboro Hundred
1M 26 - 44, born 1756 - 1774
2 M <10
1 F 26 - 44
2 F < 10
William West, Jnr died in 1800/01 and left all of his lands and tenements to his son Reuben West.

1810
1 Reuben West household listed. Household next to listing of Kendal West household.
1 M born before 1765
1 M born 1785-1794
1 M born 1795-1800
2 M born 1800-1810
1 F born before 1765
1 F born 1785-1794
1 F born 1795-1800
4 F born 1800-1810
No slaves
Note: The census taker lumped together all of the households from Baltimore, Dagsboro, Indian River, Lewis, Rehoboth, and Broadkill Hundreds. Chances are that Reuben would now be living on the property he received from his father, William West.

1820
Rheuben West, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE.
1 M 45& up, born before 1775
4 M 16 - 26, born 1794 - 1804
1 M 16 - 18, born 1802-1804
3 M < 10, born 1810-1820
1 F 26 - 45, born 1775 - 1794
2 F 10 - 16, born 1804 - 1810
1 F < 10, born 1810-1820
4 people in agriculture
1 M slave 0 -14
1 F slave 0 - 14
1 F slave 26 - 45
Note: Notice that Reuben now has a younger wife. This enumeration should also include Reuben (B) West who was born in 1812 - 1813.

1830
There is no sign of Reuben (A) or Reuben (B), suggesting that Reuben (A) either died or emigrated with his family, taking 17 yr old Reuben (B) with him. If Reuben (A) died, then Reuben (B), who did not marry until 1839, might be listed in the household of his widowed mother, or be living with other relatives. Perhaps an older brother who inherited Reuben's property.

Sussex County, DE Census:
There are no Reuben West households in Sussex, DE. There is 1 Nancy West household listed, but no sons are listed.
1 F born 1790-1800
1 F born 1810-1815
1 F born 1825-1830
Note: This Nancy is too young to be Nancy Cottingham West & it appeared Reuben had remarried, so this is probably not his widow.

Of the remaining female HoH, Lyda West is possibly a better match than Elizabeth West or Mary West. None are specified as living in Baltimore Hundred.

Three West households are listed specifically for Baltimore Hundred: Arther, Isaac and Lemuel, none fitting the criteria to be housing Reuben's widow.

1840
There is 1 Reuben West household in 1840 listed as 'Capt. Ruben West' and listed next to household of 'Nancy West, Widow'
Ruben West, Capt.:
1 M 1820-1825 (Probably closer to 1820 as he is a married adult with an occupation of Captain)
2 F 1820 - 1825 (1 of these women would be Nancy Johnson West, whom Ruben married in Baltimore 100 on 11 Feb 1839.)
Nancy West, Widow:
1 F born 1780-1790 1 F born 1800-1810
1 F born 1820-1825
1 F born 1826-1830
Note: Based on age this cannot be Nancy Cottingham West, the wife of Reuben of the 1800/1810 census. Possibly that 2nd wife, if her name was also Nancy.

Some Linch-Hudson Connections: 1765 Will of Alexander Linch 1765 MD Witnesses: Miles Hudson, Arthur Lathbury, and Daniel Coe These men are connected elsewhere in the family. Daniel Coe married Lydia Schoolfield, the widow of George Hudson. Arthur Lathbury is mentioned in other records and is living in the household of Richard c.1690 Hudson in Somerset County MD 1733, 1735, 1737, and the Lathbury connection persists through the 1800's; James Hickman Hudson b 1840, son of Seth and Polly, married Elizabeth Lathbury. Miles Hudson is son of Richard c 1690 Hudson above. 1725 John and Abigail Linch are executors of the inventory of Mary Donas, widow of George Parker; she was married first to a Lathbury and had daughter Abigail, presumably Abigail Linch. Mary also mentions a son-in-law John Larthbury. Mary leaves to daughter Amy Hutson personalty, some of which is at William Miles. 2 DEC 1725 - proved 16 NOV 1733 (Maryland Inventories 18-53) 1735 The administrative account was submitted on 3 SEP 1735 by surviving adminx. Abigail Linch alias Abigail Lathbury. (Maryland Administration Accounts, 13: 344) 1738 On 20 FEB 1738 David Hudson and wife Amy sold to Arthur Lathbury 100 acres of property originally called CHANCE, bought from Thomas Quillen 5 AUG 1727. 1770 On 19 FEB 1770 Arthur Lathbury gave to Belithe Hudson, son of Miles Hudson, 100 acres for his maintenance. 1723 On 4 SEP 1723 Frances Johnson, widow of Benjamin, sold to John Linch 75 acres of JOHNSON'S LOT, originally patented on 12 OCT 1715 by Benjamin Johnson for 150 acres on Herring Creek. (The other 75 acres was sold to Josias Smith on the same date.)
