John West (c1660-1708) vs. John West (c1660-1716) Posted 14 Mar 2008 by AnnGu3
Which John West is the son of George West (1639-1702)? There are 2 candidates vying for the position, but only 1 is the actual son of George West.
Many family tree files link Capt. John West, of Accomack & Somerset, to the family of George West. John's family owned land in Somerset MD as did Thomas West, a son of George who patented West Recovery in Baltimore Hundred. Capt. John West married Katherine Revell, whose family includes the prominent Revells and Scarburghs. Geography alone isn't John's only claim to a link. DNA evidence indicates Capt. John West may have a common ancestor with Thomas West. However, that ancestor is not necessarily George West.
The other John West, whom I shall call "John West, Planter", is found only briefly in the records, but it is that brevity which captured my attention leading me to believe that he is the true son of George West. Let the evidence prove it.
Take into account the family history detailed by me in 'Family Links: John West, Levi West, George West & Previous Generations' which provides a timeline of documented events. Robert West, the father of George, was a poor man. A former indentured servant of the Lady Elizabeth Dale, he continued to work with cattle, the trade he learned as a boy. Robert died leaving his son George an orphan. Despite the fact that his stepmother was alive at the time, the orphan boy was taken in by Thomas Dimor as an apprentice and indentured servant until he reached his majority.
Based on social status alone, it would seem very strange for the grandson of a butcher to marry a girl whose father was a member of the House of Burgesses and whose grandfather was the nortorious Col. Edmund Scarburgh.

His father's land was on the Sussex, DE side.]
1697 Thomas & John's father George West & stepmother Susannah sold their Accomack, VA property via an attorney; they too were already in Sussex.

[[[Note: These entries establish JOHN WEST in Sussex, DE by 1698, a timeframe when both George & Thomas West are established in the region. George on the DE side and Thomas on the MD side of the DE/MD border. It also established that John's wife was named Elizabeth, which is important because it links them to later entries.]]]

[[[[Notes: Thomas West dies 2 years later. Executorship of his estate is assigned to his wife Elizabeth & eldest son Robert. The executorship of his father, George West's estate, falls to Thomas' wife Elizabeth and her new husband William Freeman. This includes 1709 payments of the estate to George's underage daughter Susannah. No mention of John West whatsoever. One would think that the executorship of George's estate would remain in John West's hands. This is evidence suggesting that he is no longer alive in 1708.]]]]

Jane West (age14, daughter of George West (yeoman, dec'd)), with the consent of her sister-in-law Abigall West, was bound to Grace Lewis (widow).
[[[Note: This is important, because it creates a defined relationship between Abigail West and the daughter of George West. Abigail, as the 2nd wife of John West, was indeed the sister-in-law of young Jane West. Also note that Grace Lewis was the parent of the Elizabeth Lewis who married Jane's brother Robert. And note the fact that it is Abigail and not John who is making such a decision for his sister.]]]

Case mentions Abigail West's goods which were located at John Coes plantation.
Justice Walker by virtue of his oath as a justice reported that a bay colored horse was at the time of John West's death & likewise before in his lifetime reputed to be John West's horse.
Mr Richard Paynter reported that John West proffered to sell the horse to him
The Court at the request of the Deft asked Edward Stretcher whether or not he saw Abigail Eires or West deliver a horse to the Deft, / hee saith yes, after the death of her husband John West.
The jury went out upon it, but upon the towns being taken by the French, the court broke up

[[[[Notes: Here we have documentation indicating that JOHN WEST of DE & his wife Elizabeth have died prior to Sept. 1709 placing their deaths in the exact timeframe to match the events surrounding the executorships of George & Thomas Wests wills. Francis Thorowgood (asignee of William Freeman and his wife Catherine, executors of George West, dec'd) sued John Barnes.
[[[[Notes: Apparently sometime in 1709-1710, Elizabeth (widow of Thomas West) Freeman died. By May of 1710, it appears that William Freeman has remarried to a Catherine. Executorship of George West's estate is apparently *still* in the hands of Freeman. Since John West was originally assigned executorship of George's estate along with his brother Thomas, the fact that he remains univolved in suits brought by him on behalf of that estate suggests to me that he died prior to 1710. In 1704 a case was brought against the same John Barnes by Thomas & John West as executors of their father's estate.]]]]
Summary Notes:Based upon the above evidence, I believe that JOHN WEST of DE, who married Elizabeth Futcher, is the son of George West; that he was a landowner in Sussex County, DE by 1698; that he had a daughter Tabitha; that his wife Elizabeth died between 1689-1708; that he remarried Abigail Eires prior to 1708; and that he died between 1708-1709.
