Son to be at age 18, dau at 17 - Witt: John Stratton, Daniel Harwood, Sarah Harwood., p364.
Notes: This could be a shot in the dark, but considering that George West is one of the executors of this will, the Alice listed as William Loring's wife could be George's daughter Alice West. George died in 1702 and by that time Alice's name was Williams. She could have remarried. [her dob therefore c1663]

WEST DNA PROJECT: FAMILY GROUP #1 Ancestor of W218, W264

John seems to have lived in the Carolinas after leaving Maryland. It is probable that his children were born in the Carolinas.

Charlotte West Dade info:
John West (c1691-c1780), who married Mary Madden, may have been the father of:
Solomon West (1726-1830), who married Isabella Boyd;
John West, Jr. (born c1728);
Alexander West (c1730-p1790);
Mary West (b c1742), who married Hezekiah Collins;
Isaac West (1745-1814), who married Susanna Anderson; and
Eleanor “Nellie” West (1748-p1810), who married Alexander Barnhill.

John West and Mary Madden likely had two other daughters about whom we have no information. It is thought that one, known only as “Miss” West, married Bray Crisp.

Ann Gu analysis of Emily's 'West Family History'. Transcription of the original in black font and Ann's notes in green font.

John West was born in 1665 emigrated to America from England or Ireland.

Current internet Family Trees list John West with a DOB of 1665 or 1707. Most list his birthplace as Virginia. His DOD is listed almost exclusively as 1800 with the location being either Orange, NC or Greenville, SC.

A birthdate of 1665 would be impossible for a man who lived to 1800. Even a DOB of 1707 would be surprising for those times if John indeed lived to 1800.

At the moment, there is simply no proof as to John's DOB or DOD. There is also no proof that he was an immigrant ancestor versus being a descendant of an earlier immigrant. Emily seems to believe that her ancestors included an immigrant from England or Ireland named John West who was born around 1665. Consider the possibility that there is a missing generation, or that she simply got the dates wrong.

John, Alex, Solomon and Isaac were all sons of this John West who settled in the lower part of South Carolina there until he died. Alex West settled and died in Georgia. Solomon moved to Wayne County, Kentucky. Of the sisters one married a man by name ____ Cole, and two married the brothers by name ____Collins. Nelly West married Alex Barnhill, George West son of Solomon West moved to Saline County, Arkansas.

Emily clearly names John West as being the father of John, Alex, Solomon, Isaac and Nelly. There were 3 other sisters: two married Collins men and one married a Cole.

The fact that Emily has indicated her great-grandfather's name was John can be considered additional proof that the father of Isaac West was indeed John West and not William West. However, it provides no clues as to the identity of John's wife who is supposed to be Mary Madden.

The information indicates that the sons were all living in SC until their father died implying that John was also living in SC at the time.

John West Sr. (The Father) - No available estimated DOB/DOD. The Orange, NC records of John West Sr stretch from 1851 when the area was still part of Granville, NC to no earlier than 1768. Was John Sr still living in the 1770s-1800? His son Solomon lived to be at least 100, so it is certainly possible, but where is the documentation proving it?

John West Jr - Family Trees show DOB as abt.1728. John & brother Alexander were adults by 1753 when they served on an Orange, NC jury. There are several other records in Orange, NC dated 1755-1770 which appear to belong John Jr. A land entry between John West and Solomon West was witnessed by Isaac West in Greenville, SC in 1789 is presumed to be John Jr rather than John Sr. The same goes for the one John West household in Greenville, SC for the 1790 US Federal Census. It shows: 2M of 16+ and 6 females. Could John Jr be a bachelor living in the household of his father? Could this be a situation where John Sr was living in the household of his son? However, John Jr would certainly be old enough by 1790 to have a 16+ year old son of his own. There is no John West household for Greenville in 1800 suggesting that John Jr and family had moved on to another location or that John Jr was dead by 1800. There are, however, two land entries between a John West and others identified as his siblings dated 1801.

Solomon West - Based upon census records, Solomon's estimated DOB is <1730. The first Orange, NC records naming Solomon are dated 1755 when he bought 100 acres of land from his father, John Sr. He remained in Orange, NC through 1772 when he bought a fiddle at the estate sale of Samuel King. He had moved close to King's Mountain by 1784 when the Orange County Court recalled him to be deposed for a case. By 1787, land records show that Solomon and his brothers, along with brother-in-law Hezakiah Collins were living in Greenville, SC. Solomon West & family are enumerated in the 1790 census for Greenville, SC. In 1799, his son Isaac West moved to Wayne County, KY. Solomon also moved there, but was still enumerated in Greenville, SC in 1800. Documentation in the county records and on census records shows that Solomon lived to be 100. Solomon died 1 Dec 1830 just after the 1830 census listed him in the 100+ category.

Alex West - There are few Orange, NC records for Alexander West. He shows up on a jury in 1753 along with brother John Jr.. He bought land from his brother John and was listed on a tax record for 1755. In 1764, he was assigned to lay out a road. Various family files indicate that he died in Georgia about 1774, but the same files also indicate that his birthplace was Accomack, Virginia without offering any sort of proof either way. They list Sarah Hawkins as his wife. Emily's transcript does indicate that "Alex West settled & lived and died in Georgia", but no dates or names of additional family are provided. There is no sign of Alexander West in Greenville, SC, so it may be that he moved directly to Georgia.

Isaac West - The best available census estimation of Isaac's DOB is "before 1755". Isaac shows up in the Orange, NC records in 1770 when he buys 300 acres of land. Two years prior to that John Sr sold some land to Peter Anderson, Isaac's future father-in-law. Isaac married Susannah Anderson at an unverified date about 1769. They were living near King's Mountain in the 96th District in 1780 when Isaac was struck down with a saber by Loyalists in front of his wife and children. This account by Isaac's daughter, Phebe (West) Green, was published in 1859. Isaac survived the attack. They were enumerated in the Greenville, SC census for 1790 and 1800. Isaac moved his family to Dickson, TN by 1804 when he purchased a license to run an Ordinary. The last Dickson, TN entry for Isaac is dated 1813. Family tradition states that Isaac West died 'while visiting his Brimbery relatives' in or near Shawneetown, Gallatin, Illinois. There seems to be some doubt among West researchers that the story is true, but proof either way seems to be lacking. A descendant of Isaac's participating in the West DNA Project is a match for 'Family Group 1'.

Nelly West - Eleanor West married Alexander Barnhill. Family trees list her approximate DOB as 1748 with a marriage to Alexander in ___ making her 32 at the time of her marriage and older than her husband. Considering that the couple had at least 8 children, it seems that the dates are probably off a bit. The couple sold land to Nelly's brother John West in Greenville, SC in 1801. Various family files show no other marriages for Alexander, so it is possible that the woman listed on the 1790 (1M 16+ and 6F) and 1800 census (1M45+, 1F26-44, 1M16-25, 4F 10-15, 2M&2F <10) is actually Nelly. That would estimate her DOB as: 1756-1774, probably at the older end of the range closer to 1756. That would make more sense based upon her husband's age, and their marriage date. Family trees list Alexander's death in 1806. The 1810 census list a "Widow Barnhill" (1F 45+(<1765), 1M&1F 10-15). There is no Eleanor Barnhill listed for 1820 as a Head of Household. It is possible that she died, remarried, or was living in the household of a relative.

Mary West - Mary West married Hezekiah Collins. Emily's account of her grandfather's siblings does not name Mary West, but it indicates that one of his sisters married a Collins. Hezekiah Collins was listed in Orange, NC Tax Records in 1755, along with the West brothers, and John West Sr. He is named in several Court & land records along with the Wests, including on in Greenville, SC indicating that they also moved to SC.

____ West (female) married ____ Collins

____ West (female) married ____ Cole

Anderson West was born 5th December 1790. Celia Tubb was born 15th February 1794.

Emily's account of the West family takes a leap to the next generation. Anderson West was the son of Isaac West Sr & Susanna Anderson. His birth and death dates have been established. A photo of his tombstone is posted on this site.

_____ Tubb emigrated from England to America married, had two sons, started back to England on business ---- was never heard from again. The names of the sons were George and William both the grandfathers of Celia Tubb. Her father and mother were cousins. John Tubb son of William and father of Celia Tubb was wounded at the Battle of Kings Mountain.

He lived near the Battle ground. His wife took a horse an searched out her wounded husband and neighbor son. Mounting first one and then the other. Carrying them a short distance, dismounting the foremost one then bringing up the rear and passing on some distance ahead until she got them both home &C.

Names of the Ancestors of the West Family
Generally

Peter Anderson was born in the year 1665. he was a Swiss. Emigrated to America and settled nine miles from Philadelphia. From there he moved to Orange County, North Carolina, he lived one hundred and seventeen (117) years.

Note that Peter Anderson, father of Susan, was born in 1665, a year also attributed by Emily to John West. Also note that Peter is supposed to have lived 117 years. It seems very unlikely that both Susan's father and Isaac's father lived to be 100+. I think the dates are off significantly on John West, Sr., but again have no proof one way or the other.

Susan Anderson and Isaace West, father and mother of Anderson West was married in Orange County, North Carolina.

Katy Anderson, daughter of Peter Anderson married a man named Springer. Polly Anderson married Peter Bromby. Margaret Anderson married William Stallcutt. Sallie Anderson married ____ King.

Susan Anderson and Isaac West was married 1769. From NC they moved to Greenville District, South Carolina in 1782. And in 1801 they moved to Dickson County, Tennessee. In 1810 Susan West died and in 1814 Isaac West from home near Shawneetown on the Ohio river.

Kate West married John Barnhill. Pheba West married Isaac Green, Susan West married Lynn Walker, Mary West married Elisha Simmons who died she then married Henry Brigg, Sallie West married John Mae, Nancy West married Jerry Ward, Elizabeth West married Samuel Sparks. John West married Sallie Walker, Isaac West married Hanna Rupell. Solomon and Abner West both young men unmarried died aged 22.

Anderson West was married to Celia Tubb on the 30th of April 1812 and in 1816 moved to Alabama. In 1837 moved to Holmes County, Mississippi.

In 1842 moved back to Alabama. In 1849 cme back to Holmes County, Mississippi where most of his children lived.

His wife took a horse went in search of her husband and found him woudned and one of their neighbors wounded also. She got them out from amoung the dead. Mounted and dismounted alternately and until she got them both home."

If John West, Sr was born circa 1665, he cannot have died in Greenville, SC around 1800. There is either a missing generation in there or the original date estimates are wrong. It is also possible that John actually died earlier in Orange, NC and that it was after his death in NC that the sons moved to Greenville, SC. I have found no evidence of John in SC so far.

The records of Orange County, NC all corroborate the presence of John Sr, John Jr., Alexander, Solomon, and Isaac West. It is important to note that there are no William Wests listed in the area since William is a name that pops up in random Family Trees as a potential candidate to be Isaac's father instead of John. Evidence seems to point to John, though I have found no information on his wife who is reportedly named Mary Madden.

I have gathered what information I can find on this particular West line. Through a descendant of Isaac West, they have been proven to be members of the West Surname Project's 'Family Group 1'. They could be descendants of the known immigrant ancestor, Robert West, or descendants of a related branch of Wests coming from England or Ireland at a later date.

Alex West: The Alex West who married Sarah Hawkins was not John's son, Alex, who moved to Georgia; it was John's grandson Alex, a son of the Solomon West who moved from Greenville Dist., SC, to Wayne County, Kentucky. Sarah was a daughter of William Eaton Hawkins, and there is a power of attorney among the Wayne County, Kentucky, records, proving this. Agreed

I wonder whether the supposition that John West, Sr.'s wife Mary was surnamed Madden was an inference from the fact that Isaac West & Susanna Anderson had a grandson named Anderson Madden West, son of Anderson West.

Relatives of the Browns of Mill Springs, Kentucky, Including the Fisher, Gaar, Gholson, Hutchison, Weaver and West Families, by James E. Brown and Margaret Brown Altendahl, published in 1992
The compilers of this family history stated that John West (born about 1707) and Mary Madden were the parents of Solomon (born about 1726) who married Isabella Boyd, Mary Boyd(?), and Martha Norton; John West (born about 1728); Alexander West (born about 1728); an unidentified female (born about 1734) who married John Collins; an unidentified female (born about 1738) who married an unidentified Cole; Mary West (born about 1742) who married Hezekiah Collins; Isaac West (born about 1745), who married Susanna Anderson, daughter of Peter and Catherine Lynam Anderson; and Eleanor “Nellie” West (born about 1748) who married Alexander Barnhill. Additionally, these compilers indicated that William and Thomas may have been two other sons.
