obit extract
Funeral of John W. West, Who Died Suddenly. The funeral of John W. West, a retired Delaware bay and river pilot, occurred yesterday. The deceased died very suddenly Sunday of heart disease. The suddenness of his death calls up the deaths of several of his family who ail have died without any warning. His father died at the Methodist Church on his knees just as he had said "amen" to a prayer in which he was leading the congregation. A brother, Edward West, died as suddenly in Philadelphia. Another brother, William West, died in bed without arousing his sleeping wife beside him. John W. West was one of the first Prohibitionists in the state and always has been a staunch advocate of that movement. The death creates a vacancy in the number of pilots, but will not advance any of the second class pilots to first class, because some months ago he relinquished his. branch and allowed Harry W. Chambers to be advanced
