Biography
Posted 21 Sep 2014 by bethmiller98
Dr George Washington West was born in Meta, Missouri. He died at the age of eighty-four. He received his education at the Barnes school of Medicine affiliated with Washington University in St. Louis Missouri. after receiving letters from his brother Warren praising the hunting and drier climate of the Rocky Mountain region, George packed his medical books and boarded a west bound train with his wife Lulu and two sons, Warren and Homer (Tobe). He heard talk of "the Star of all Valleys" to the northwest in need of a doctor. In November 1903, he was granted a license to practice medicine in Wyoming. By early 1904 Dr. West moved his family into a log home on 6th Avenue in Afton.
How lucky our valley was when such a person as Dr. West decided to stay Removal of appendixes and tonsils was done on Kitchen tables by the light of coal oil lamps with household pots and pans used to sterilize instruments and bandages, chloroform or ether dripped onto a face mask of wire and gauze was used as an anesthetic. Dr. West was in the valley during the Spanish flu in 1918 and 1010, and he traveled throughout the valley by team and bobsled in subzero weather to deliver babies and treat illnesses, with his favorite dog Cooper lying across his feet to keep them from freezing and wrapped up in a buffalo robe with icicles hanging from his mustache upon arrival at a patient's home. When smallpox spread through the valley in the early twenties, schools were closed, and Dr. West set up vaccination centers in the school of each community. The fee was one dollar for an inoculation.
He served on the School Board, Farm Bureau, Star Valley State bank Board of Directors, Lincoln County Fair Board, in the Lincoln County Health Office, and as Afton City Judge. in his forty-tree year career Dr. West delivered over four thousand babies, most in their won homes. Times were hard and Dr. West accepted livestock, produce, hay, cords of wood, or anything he could use, for payment. He charged ten dollars for maternity, and a tonsillectomy was five dollars. He never mailed anyone a bill. Common medications included quinine, Denver mud, pneumonia jacket, eucalyptus oil, mustard plasters, and a black cherry cough syrup.
His wife Lulu died of a heart attack leaving four children. A daughter, Lucille died as an infant. He met and married Wena Tuller from Paris Idaho. Four children were born to this union: Lulu, Jack Mark and Max.
A few years after Dr West remarried, a spacious kitchen and bathroom with indoor plumbing was added to their home. Everything in both rooms was painted white. The cupboards housed sterilized instruments, sheets, towels, and bandages. Before surgery it was necessary to move everything out, and scrub the entire room, ceiling to floor with disinfectant. this was the task of Wena (Alvina) and the daughters. Often the West children slept on the couch or the bunk on the porch, even the bathtub and floor became their beds, because their won beds were taken by patients.
To Dr. West, Greys river was the earth's answer to heaven. The doctor pitched his tent beside the river, often at Cabin Creek, to rest from the rigors of his profession. During the final days of his life he murmured, "Oh Lord, let it be quick & easy." during the final week of his life, Dr. West relived the Spanish flu epidemic, his days on grays river, and the triumphs and tragedies of his life and career. December had come and still no snow had fallen. "There won't be moisture for the crops next summer," he worried. Dr George Washington West died at on forty-five p.m. on December 5, 1956. A foot of wet snow covered the ground for his funeral on December 8.
