Family stories further assert that when the family traveled from Illinois back into Missouri, John Laffoon West's wife Permelia Emaline (Fancher) West was pregnant with Edward Laffoon West. For this reason, she was unable to make the trip without stopping for a while in St. Louis, which is why, according to the story, they procured use of Grant's Cabin, where Edward was born January 19, 1866. Edward Laffoon West had a sister, Martha Ellen West, called Mattie. Mattie was born around 1862 to 1864. The death certificate for her son Floyd gives the place of birth of his mother (Mattie) as Sangamon County, Illinois. Tthis suggests that the family was in Sangamon County, Illinois sometime around 1862 to 1864, then set out for Missouri perhaps in 1865. Because Permelia was pregnant, they then would have moved into Grant's Cabin (presumably they were not there long) and eventually traveled onward to their new home of Leasburg, Crawford County, Missouri.
