Wesley West was born near Lexington Kentucky, Oct 6, 1808. With his parents he moved to Adams Co., Ohio, when two years old; and four years later to Ross Co., and two years later to Fayette Co., in the same state where he continued to reside until October 1859, when with his family he established his home, where he spent his last days, an old homestead, just south of this city, adjoining the college campus. At her home in Lexington, Ohio, on Nov. 14, 1839, he was united in marriage to Polly A. McKay, who will survives him. Together, hand in hand, they commenced the uneven battle of life on his forest farm near Stanton, Fayette Co., Ohio.
Through his personal and ceaseless toil, through the steady persistent unfaltering strokes of his own Ax, those mighty oaks and towering elms, gave way to fields rich with the harvest of fruit and grain wherewith his family, for whom he ever lived, might find food, shelter and (not legible). Not alone (not legible) thus toil for always close by his side was she who stays yet a little while to mourn his going. After conversion he and his young wife in 1840, united with the Protestant Methodist church of White Oak a near by preaching station, and where he continued as active member until their removal to Mt. Vernon, when by letter he became identified with the Methodist Episcopal church of this place, and whose records after a continuous membership of over 54 years, his name is still be be found. his infirmities for the past twenty years have kept him from regular attendance at his chosen place of worship, but he went forward living a good will toward men and arrainging (sic) his house for the coming of the pale messenger.
He was a man of unusual strength and endurance until 1852, when he met with a very serious accident which left with him a permanent lameness and was the occasion of intense suffering during all his subsequent life. It has been said that this suffering was to him geater than a hundred deaths and yet no one ever heard him complain of his misfortune or his affliction. He bore it all with perfect meekness and true christian fortitude. Aside from this affliction he knew but little of sickness until the last two years of his life, when the feebleness of a ripe old age proved to be more than an equal for his strong independent spirit.
Though on many occasions during that time he was brought low in the conflict, yet not a murmur was heard. The ever wasting and benumbing influences of age were seen in his bent form and feeble step, yet reason and memory even to the last refused to be dethroned, or share in other bodily infirmities. He could recite in minutes the detail incidents and experiences of his every day life, covering a period from childhood up to his last days. unlike men of his age, he lived in the present as well as in the past. Although with him everything was in readiness for the Journey, he still found new Joys even to the last hours of his last day. Sitting in his old arm chair in his favorite place on the front piazza of his home on the beautiful Sabbath afternoon of May 13, 1894, he heard the welcome summons, “Well done good and faithful servant,” and at once the answer floated back to his Savior “I am coming.” A moment more and the spirit, as gentle as the evening breeze which fanned his snowy locks, left its tenement of flesh and went forth to claim its celestial inheritance prepared for those who suffer, who weep and who wait.
The deceased patriarch leaves behind him none but friends. He knew no enemies. Among the many relatives who mourn his loss are in his father’s family, an only brother, Eli West, of Mechanicsville, Ia, who was present to pay him the last tokens of brotherly affection, and three sisters, Mrs. Craig of Stanton, Ohio, Mrs. Tutor and Mrs. Pavy of Indiana the latter now two years his senior.
Of his own family he leaves the aged widow, who was the choice of his young manhood, five sons and four daughters. Of the sons Isaac N., Ely and David M. have always lived near him, his home for the past four years with the latter. Thomas T. lives at Pawnee Oklahoma and Elijah A. at Fort Dodge Ia. Of the daughters, Mrs. Sallie W. Oldham lives in Eldorado, Kan., Mrs. Hattie E. Harper at Pierre, So, Dak., Mrs. Mary A. Kirk at Madison, N.J., and Mrs. Margaret J. Thomas who lives but two miles from his home. Florence E. Waln, preceding him to that better land by about eight years.
Thirty-two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren are left to emulate his life and revere his memory.
All the family were present at the funeral except Mrs. Kirk, Mrs. Oldham and Thomas, the second son. The pall bearers were his three sons, Isaac, David and Elijah and his three grandsons, Oliver D. and Geo. L. Harman, sons of Mrs. Thomas and Charles Wesley, eldest son of Ely West. The funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 at the old home and were conducted by his pastor, Rev. H. O. Pratt assisted by Dr. King and Dr. Boyd, of Cornell College. A mixed quartet from the college rendered most beautifully the soul and sentiment of his two favorite hymns, “Nearer My God to Thee,” and “ A Charge to Keep I Have.” The pastor spoke from the text, “Blessed are they who died in the Lord,” while the others dwelt upon the character and life of the deceased as they had know him during these many years. A large concourse of sympathizing friends followed the remains to our beautiful cemetery where they were quietly lead away to await the resurrection morn. Thus with a long and useful life, fully rounded out as but few live to shape them, and after a Journey commenting almost with the century, 35 years of it with us in this community - Wesley West, Husband, Father and Grandfather, at the age of 85 years, 7 months and 7 days goes out from among us never to return.
