In 1850, the West family was already in Marion Township, Hendricks County, Indiana. The census record showed that Isaac was born in North Carolina and Mary, who was listed as Polly, in Kentucky. Presumably, they married in Kentucky as the first 2 children, Hannah, age 25, and Sarah, age 23, were born there. Some genealogy researchers have identified this marriage as theirs: Polly Turner to Isaac West on July 13, 1825 in Wayne County, Kentucky. However, the gravestone gives a different date for the marriage. The other children were all born in Indiana: Rhoda, age 15; Zurich (aka Xury), age 17; Polly A., age 13; Moses, age 10; Isaac (aka Captain), age 6; and Narcissa, age 4.
In 1860, the census taker recorded Isaac's place of birth as Kentucky, but did not record the location for anyone else. Only Moses, Isaac and Narcissa were still at home.
In 1870, Mary and Isaac seem to be living in separate homes. Both were still in the New Winchester area, but Mary was living with the James and Nancy Bowen family. Isaac had a family living with him. It was Dr. John Warner, his wife, Mary (Rose), and two children, Fred, and Russell. Dr. Warner served as a surgeon during the Civil War, so the arrangements could have been temporary. Isaac's place of birth was again recorded as Kentucky.
In 1880, Mary and Isaac were back together in the same household. Again Kentucky was recorded as his place of birth. They had a grandson named Oliver Robbins living with them.
